The Avelo System
Lighter, Safer, and More Fun
Imagine a scuba set that’s nearly half the weight of your current one, yet gives you more bottom time. Imagine that scuba could provide the freedom and streamlined experience of freediving. Now, imagine all this with immediately perfect neutral buoyancy.
Sounds like magic? We call it Avelo.
Avelo FAQs

What is the Avelo System?
The Avelo System is a revolutionary scuba system that takes a new approach to buoyancy control by adding or removing water from the system, which creates a safer, lighter weight, and more enjoyable dive experience. It consists of two components: a Hydrotank and a Jetpack.
- Ditch the weight of heavy standard scuba systems and feel the freedom of diving Avelo.
- Enjoy longer dives and your time underwater instead of constantly managing buoyancy.
- Improve diving safety. The Avelo System prevents uncontrolled ascents and descents.
- Feel the freedom of freediving with the ability to breathe underwater.
How does the Avelo System work?
The Avelo System is buoyant at the surface. When divers want to descend, they pump water into the water chamber to decrease their buoyancy. If divers want to become more buoyant, they purge water out of the water chamber.
The advantage of this approach is ultra-stable buoyancy. Once the Avelo System establishes neutral buoyancy, divers can change depth with no change to buoyancy. Even when the Avelo System is somewhat positively or negatively buoyant, it maintains the same level of buoyancy as it changes depth.
The Avelo System was also designed to be much lighter than standard scuba, making diving a breeze!
How easy is it to dive with the Avelo System?
It is wonderfully easy to move through the water with Avelo! Our one day Recreational Avelo Diver (RAD) certification course consists of two dives that teach you to confidently use the Avelo System and experience the incredible freedom of diving Avelo. Most divers cannot believe how much more effortless diving Avelo is!
Why is buoyancy control easier and safer with the Avelo System?
With standard scuba gear, a BCD is used to create a bubble underwater that changes its volume as you inflate and deflate. However, since this bubble is ultra-sensitive to depth changes, it changes buoyancy quickly when you ascend and descend. This creates an unstable form of neutral buoyancy, which is why problems such as uncontrolled ascents exist in standard scuba.
In comparison, Avelo’s lightweight scuba system stays neutrally buoyant regardless of depth changes. It has no depth-sensitive bubble. Instead, we “borrow” water weight from the ocean. This concept provides a very stable form of neutral buoyancy, which leads to longer dives for any diver. New divers can hover in the water like pros and professional divers can accomplish their tasks much more efficiently. Technical divers will enjoy considerable weight reduction and additional streamlining. The system helps divers focus on what we love about diving.
Can I rent an Avelo System at Gilboa Quarry?
Yes! Gilboa Quarry has three Avelo Systems that are available for rent and use by any RAD (Recreational Avelo Diver) Specialty certification holders.
All Avelo Systems are rented out in-store on a first come first serve basis but will be reserved for any upcoming scheduled class times.
What is a RAD Specialty Certification?
RAD stands for “Recreational Avelo Diver.”
To rent and dive the Avelo System you need your RAD Specialty certification. The RAD course involves an e-learning, approximately 3-hour long practical portion, 2 open water dives, and gives the particpants ample time to learn, enjoy, and become confident with the Avelo System.
Gilboa Quarry offers the RAD Specialty course to all Open Water and higher certified divers.
Can I get RAD Certified at Gilboa Quarry?
Yes! Gilboa quarry offers the RAD Specialty course to all Open Water and higher certified divers. Classes are ongoing throughout the dive season.
Rent The Avelo System
All rental equipment at Gilboa Quarry including the Avelo Systems are rented out in-store on a first come first serve basis.
